The expression Memento (Latin, meaning “be aware of mortality”) comes from ancient Rome. There was a ritual there where a slave stood or walked behind the victorious general during a triumphal procession. He held a gold or laurel wreath over the head of the victorious and continuously exhorted with the following words:
“Memento mori.” (“Remember that you will die.”)
It thus became a symbol of vanitas, transience.
