Union Jack

The Union Jack, or Union Flag, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. The flag has been used in its current form since 1801. The flag's design represents the union of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The three crosses represent the patron saints of the three kingdoms of the British Isles. An earlier design of the flag, incorporating the flags of England and Scotland, was the flag of the Kingdom of Great Britain between 1707 and 1800. This design was first used in 1606, during the reign of James VI and I. The current design was adopted on January 1, 1801, when the Act of Union 1800 came into effect, uniting Ireland and Great Britain. An additional cross was added to signify the union with the former Kingdom of Ireland.
